Join us on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 in celebrating the annual Math Day at The University of Findlay. The purpose of Math Day is to show students the fun side of mathematics, how it is useful in the real world, and for us to relax and enjoy the beauty of mathematics.
Every year we invite reputed speakers to present mathematical ideas in an accessible way. This year’s speakers are Steve Harnish (10-11 a.m.) and Darryl Nester (1-2 p.m.) from Bluffton University. The talks will be in the AMU MPR.
Steve Harnish earned his bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics from Goshen College in 1985 and a doctorate in mathematical logic from the University of Illinois in 1996. He has taught and presented at international conferences and universities in four continents and devoted nearly three of four decades of collegiate teaching to Bluffton University, serving as mathematics professor and frequent chair within Bluffton’s mathematical and natural sciences since 1996. In addition to teaching and celebrating the potential and successes of students and colleagues, he is particularly passionate about mentoring undergraduates in computational research and NSF-funded internships at Bluffton, regional universities, and national labs.
Darryl Nester earned bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science from Bluffton in 1988. After graduate work in statistics at Purdue University, he returned to Bluffton in 1992 to teach mathematics. His interests include probability, puzzles, recreational math, differential equations, and developing web apps to demonstrate and explore mathematical concepts. His greatest claim to fame (in certain nerdy circles) is being the creator of the page that appears first in the Google search “slope field app.”
