Dr. Varleisha D. (Gibbs) Lyons, PhD, OTD, OTR/L, ASDCS,FAOTA, has over 20 years of experience as an occupational therapist. She founded and operated a private therapy firm for more than a decade and established Delaware’s first occupational therapy program. Lyons made history as the first Black Indigenous American woman to serve as the Scientific Programs Officer at the American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTA).
Lyons currently holds the position of vice president of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, access & belonging and governance at AOTA where she has also served as the vice president of practice engagement and capacity building. An international lecturer and author of four books – including a bestseller – Lyons is dedicated to mentoring underrepresented individuals and fostering growth and healing despite traumatic experiences or diagnoses.
Her research spans multiple disciplines and professions, with grant funding in community-based services and interprofessional education and care. Through her efforts, she has guided many into the occupational therapy profession and supported families nationwide through her volunteer work. Lyons’ areas of expertise include neuroanatomy, self-regulation strategies across the lifespan, health inequities, and trauma-responsive approaches.
Saturday, Feb. 15th is the Breast Cancer Awareness Basketball Game. Baked goods will be for sale before, during, and after the men’s and women’s basketball games against Kentucky Wesleyan in the lobby of Croy. Themed baskets will be raffled off at halftime of the men’s game. Raffle tickets are $2 apiece, 3 for $5, 6 for $10, and so forth. Tickets can be purchased at the game or ahead of time by emailing [email protected]; you do not have to be present to win a basket.
If you attend the game, please wear pink in support. All proceeds from the bake sale and basket raffle will be donated to Cancer Patient Services of Findlay.
An exhibition featuring art created by University of Findlay art and graphic design seniors will be on display from Feb. 17 to March 18 in the Lea Gallery located in the Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion. The exhibition reception is on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 1-2:30pm.

The annual Symposium for Scholarship and Creativity provides undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to share their research, creativity, and professional learning experiences with the University and the greater community. Students are recognized for their academic and other achievements at the opening university-wide and individual college awards ceremonies. Each of the six colleges invites an alumnus to address students at its ceremony.
We invite students to participate as presenters, demonstrators, and performers.
The UF Jazz Ensemble presents an afternoon of traditional jazz and contemporary music. The ensemble will be under the direction of Dr. Wes King, Director of Bands at the University of Findlay.
Student artwork will be on display from April 7th to May 1st.
Healthy Kids Day is a national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids. For over 30 years, the YMCA and their communities across the country have hosted the event. Partnering with the Findlay Family YMCA, Blanchard Valley Health Systems, and Hancock Public Health, the University welcomes families to enjoy dozens of fun activities to motivate and teach kids how to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The event is free and open to the public for children of all ages.
The University of Findlay Choirs, under the direction of Dr. SeaHwa Jung, will present a captivating concert titled “Colorful Love,” featuring a rich selection of choral works celebrating the theme of love. The program will highlight diverse and heartfelt love songs, with the Wapakoneta High School Choir, directed by Marissa Lewis, joining the university choirs on stage for this special performance.
The University of Findlay Orchestra is a string ensemble composed of students, staff, and community players. The orchestra will be under the direction of Madeline Damschroder of the University of Findlay.

The Summer Institute satisfies the residency requirement for the student’s Doctor of Education Program. Attendance at The Summer Institute is mandatory for all students at the conclusion of year one, year two, and year three of the program. Students are expected to be present and participate in the activities for all three days for each of their required Institutes. As a result of the Summer Institute, the students will: disseminate and discuss their research, construct meaningful feedback on the research of other doctoral students, create professional relationships with faculty and doctoral students that will support their research, presentation and/or publication opportunities, and professional/academic aspirations, develop research and writing skills through participation in sessions and workshops The Summer Institute features activities for students in every year. When students are not presenting, they are expected to choose from the available presentations and participate in the sessions. In addition to student presentations, the Summer Institute features other sessions designed to promote the students’ progress in the program. Past institutes have featured guest speakers, times to meet with Dissertation Chairs, faculty research presentations, a panel on the dissertation from recent doctoral graduates, a campus tour, a visit to the world famous Mazza museum, numerous workshops, and opportunities for students to network and socialize with the members of their cohort as well as students from other cohorts.
